Credit Card Crisis Looms (say that 5 times fast)

First came the mortgage crisis. Now comes the credit card crisis.

After years of flooding Americans with credit card offers and sky-high credit lines, lenders are sharply curtailing both, just as an eroding economy squeezes consumers.

The pullback is affecting even creditworthy consumers and threatens an already beleaguered banking industry with another wave of heavy losses after an era in which it reaped near record gains from the business of easy credit that it helped create.

Lenders wrote off an estimated $21 billion in bad credit card loans in the first half of 2008 as more borrowers defaulted on their payments. With companies laying off tens of thousands of workers, the industry stands to lose at least another $55 billion over the next year and a half, analysts say. Currently, the total losses amount to 5.5 percent of credit card debt outstanding, and could surpass the 7.9 percent level reached after the technology bubble burst in 2001.

“If unemployment continues to increase, credit card net charge-offs could exceed historical norms,” Gary L. Crittenden, Citigroup’s chief financial officer, said.

Faced with sobering conditions, companies that issue MasterCardVisa and other cards are rushing to stanch the bleeding, even as options once easily tapped by borrowers to pay off credit card obligations, like home equity lines or the ability to transfer balances to a new card, dry up.

Big lenders — like American ExpressBank of America, Citigroup and even the retailer Target — have begun tightening standards for applicants and are culling their portfolios of the riskiest customers. Capital One, another big issuer, for example, has aggressively shut down inactive accounts and reduced customer credit lines by 4.5 percent in the second quarter from the previous period, according to regulatory filings.

Check This Washing Machine

I found this on the Padwa Design site and it’s a washer that’s designed to allow you to either wash whites and colors at the same time, or simply just do a smaller load. Pretty cool eh?

Listen To This: P!nk’s New Track

I know I’m a pretty devout P!nk fan, but this song is really amazing to me.  It’s called “Ave Mary A” which I assume is supposed to be a play on “Ave Maria”, the religious operatic song.

Or you can click here to watch it, and continue on for the lyrics. Continue reading

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Opening this weekend! Click here to see some reviews if you’re curious.

I’ve posted about this movie in the past, but I suspect it’s going to be a big one. This one stars Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks AND Traci Lords! Hallelujah that someone noticed her talent. No, her other talent – you’re all filthy!

Synopsis: After the success of KNOCKED UP, Seth Rogen pairs up with another comely comedienne in ZACK & MIRI MAKE A PORNO. In this Kevin Smith comedy, two desperate friends (Rogen and SLITHER’s Elizabeth Banks) decide to earn a little extra money by creating their own adult film, but they also discover that they may be more than just pals.

Speaking of Traci Lords, she made a CD years ago called 1000 Fires that of course I bought, and the lead single was called “Control”. Continue reading to catch the vid: Continue reading

Against My Usual Judgement

I’ll post the new Hilary Duff video for her song called “Reach Out” and let me tell you why:

  1. She basically remakes Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” and that’s always a winning song, no matter how you slice it.
  2. I have to give props to any Disney star that wants to get just a little bit “dirty” and transcend their “apple pie” image.
  3. The video is slick and a little bit subversive, so add Hilary to that mix and I can’t hate.

Without further ado, here’s the vid.

As always, here’s the link if the above video doesn’t load – cause you know, YouTube and WordPress be actin’ a fool sometimes. Or if your work puts you on lockdown and blocks YouTube, the additional link tends to work even when “The Man” is tryin’ to shut your shit down.
