Honda Insight: A Hybrid With a Budget Price

Honda (HMC) revealed the look and name Thursday of its new hybrid-only car to go on sale in the U.S. next spring. It is expected to be one of the cheapest cars in the next generation of gas-electric hybrids.

“They will crack the under-$20,000 barrier,” predicts John O’Dell, senior editor of Edmund’s Green Car Advisor. “It’s a new generation of a more affordable hybrid.”

It will be called the Insight, reviving the name of the first hybrid in the U.S., sold here by Honda from 1999 to 2006. A concept version of the new Insight, of which a photo was released Thursday, will be unveiled next month at the 2008 Paris International Auto Show. Continue reading

Equality For All – Music!

Barack Obama will be our 44th president but we’ll truly know that equality has come to America when the Quad City Christmas is on the same radio holiday playlist as Lil Drummer Boy.

Care to join me in the karaoke version of the best musical monstrosity ever?

I know it’s not even Thanksgiving so maybe it’s a bit too early, but orchestrating change takes time!

Google’s Gmail Gets Free Video Chat

On Tuesday, Google plans to launch a Web browser plug-in that will allow Gmail users to conduct video and voice chat sessions with other suitably equipped members of the Gmail tribe.

The plug-in requires an Intel(NSDQ: INTC)-based computer running Mac OS X or a computer running Windows XP or Vista, a Webcam, and/or a microphone. It works with browsers that support the current version of Gmail: Chrome, Firefox 2.0+, Internet Explorer 7.0, and Safari 3.0. There are no specific plans for a Linux-based plug-in at the moment.

To install the plug-in, click on the “Options” menu in Gmail’s left-hand navigation bar chat pane. There you’ll find an “Add voice/video chat” menu option that will initiate a one-time installation download, assuming the service has been activated on your account. Once the download is complete, reload the Gmail page and you should see that the “Options” link has changed to become a “Video & more” link.

There’s also an installation link at Gmail.com/videochat. Read more about this here.

Trailer Time: Disney-Pixar’s “Up”

From the Academy Award-nominated team of director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.”) and co-director Bob Peterson comes “Up,” a comedic adventure taking off (and lifting spirits) in summer 2009. Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. “Up” takes audiences on a thrilling journey where the unlikely pair encounter wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures. When seeking adventure next summer — look “Up.”

Keep reading for the first (but shorter) trailer for Up, and here’s the site for it. Adorable! Continue reading

Invest In Us!

Forbes (via MSNBC) listed the cities most likely to rebound from the current real estate crisis, therefore making them the best for investing. The best cities to invest in are those that are considered gateways to international investment, have vital downtowns where people can forgo cars, and don’t have a glut of condos or office space.

These traits landed Seattle the No. 1 spot on the list. No city scored above a 6.15 on a scale of one to nine (one being an abysmal place to invest and nine being excellent).

Seattle is “a diversified market, has a good base of business and is becoming a 24-hour city,” says Stephen Blank, senior resident fellow, finance, of the Urban Land Institute. “It’s going to be in a good position to come back.”

Although the city is suffering from the loss of Washington Mutual and the downsizing of Starbucks, Boeing and Microsoft are still relatively strong. Apartment vacancies are low and there aren’t too many new buildings going up, meaning the market won’t be oversupplied. The same is true in the retail space.

Go to the article for the rest of the list.

Veterans Day – What You Need To Know

As we take this day to honor our wonderful service people who have and continue to fight for our country, it’s important to take a few minutes to understand what the day represents. Some Americans don’t know why we commemorate our Veterans on Nov.11 and it’s imperative that all Americans know the history of Veterans Day so that we can honor our former servicemembers properly. So here’s a brief history lesson:

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.'” As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress — at the urging of the veterans service organizations — amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. Who is (Ugly) Betty’s Hot New Neighbor?

If you watch Ugly Betty and have thought to yourself, “Who is that musician-hottie Jesse living next to Betty?”, perhaps I can help. You might also have the other question in your mind that I also have which is, “How can Betty work in such a trendy place and dress like she’s color blind?” but I digress as usual.

Back to the hottie: His name is Val Emmich and he is a real living and breathing musician. On the show, he’s just a helpful neighbor that seems to help Betty live her life to the fullest while she helps him persevere through the rough world of music and angst. Will romance abound?

You can check out his MySpace page and see why people compare his voice to David Bowie. I can totally hear it. Have a look at his video for “Get On With It” after the jump. Continue reading
