eHarmony Settles & Launches ‘Compatible Partners’

Online dating service eHarmony.com has agreed to create a new website for matching same-sex couples, as part of discrimination settlement with New Jersey’s Civil Rights Division.

The agreement comes more than three years after New Jersey resident Eric McKinley filed a formal complaint against the matchmaking company over its heterosexuals-only policy. The state’s Division of Civil Rights held an investigation and ruled in 2007 it had probable cause to uphold the allegations.

Under the terms of the settlement, eHarmony will launch a separate service next March, called Compatible Partners. eHarmony will also pay $50,000 to the attorney general’s office to cover investigation-related administrative costs and pay $5,000 to McKinley. He’ll also get a free one-year subscription to the new website.  (Read More)

Dubyabejay Commentary:
I’m not a big fan of the name for the new spinoff site – it doesn’t have any sizzle.  And, why can’t they just invest in their IT and online programming to expand the services of their existing site?  Wouldn’t that be a lot more like right?

Katherine McPhee Tears It Up ‘Somewhere’

Bravo, bravo! Katherine McPhee tore up Somewhere, with David Foster on the piano. The other Babs would be proud, I loved it and I’m not even a Barbra Streisand or a showtunes fan.

Welcome back Katherine McPhee! Who needs American Idol anyway?

No More Butts – The Great American Smokeout

Today is the Great American Smokeout, and it’s sponsored by the American Cancer Society. It is estimated that 45 million Americans across the country still smoke. So if you’re triggered by sex, don’t get down with anyone. If you’re triggered by food, don’t eat. If you’re triggered by sex AND food, please call me. Do try to avoid stressful triggers if you can, including the unrelated (unless they quit smoking too) but still important gun triggers. Getting shot hurts y’all.

That is exactly why the American Cancer Society holds the Great American Smokeout, with the aim of trying to be able to reduce the number of smokers in the U.S. and thus make them healthier.

This is the 32nd annual Great American Smokeout, and comes at a time when the country as a whole is trying to reduce smoking.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) set a goal for 2010 to reduce the number of smokers in the U.S. to just 12% of the population.

Figures have shown that in the last year there has been a reduction from around 21% in 2006 down to 19.8% in 2007.

This is still far below their goal of 12%, but it shows that smoking is going down and not up. (source)
