Daily Tune-Up: Other People’s Happiness

Yesterday I wrote about removing hatred from our hearts. One of the ways to do this is to rejoice at other people’s happiness.

Is there a friend or relative you’re jealous of? Be happy for them instead.

Daily Tune-Up: It’s About This

tuneupdailySaturday, May 9

You will have lots of opportunities to work on removing hatred from your heart today.

That’s good because a person who can’t open their heart to an enemy will never fully grasp what the study of Kabbalah is all about.

Is there someone in your life that you really can’t stand? Practice makes perfect.

Daily Tune-Up: Burn The Paper

tuneupdaily8Friday, April 24 (yeah, it’s yesterday’s)

Here is a technique for banishing fear that comes from a great kabbalist who lived during the 16th century, Rav Isac Luria (The Ari, the Holy Lion.)

Light a candle and sit down with a pencil and a small piece of paper. Write down your fear on the paper, and meditate upon it. Summon forth the feelings and symptoms associated with the fear. Then write down all the emotions and feelings that this fear causes you. Acknowledge to yourself that your own reactive nature, from this life or a past life, is responsible for the manifestation of this fear.

Now take the paper and burn it!

Find time to do this today. Many people get great relief from this simple technique.

Daily Tune-Up: Outside of Yourself

tuneupdaily7Thursday, April 23

According to Kabbalah, when you find yourself gripped by anxiety, you’re thinking only about yourself. Reactive behavior distances you from your soul, so perform a sharing action. Sharing connects you back to the 99%, and automatically the Light that flows from this realm displaces your fear just as a light bulb displaces darkness from a room.

Today, one way to deal with moments of fear and anxiety is to shift into sharing mode. Look for someone to help. Take an action outside yourself.

Daily Tune-Up: Love In Return

tuneupdaily6Tuesday, April 21

” … an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth … ” – Exodus

As an alternative to the conventional interpretation of retributive justice, The Zohar teaches that this famous biblical line is instructing us how energy works, ie., what you give is what you get.

Today, give Light and you’ll get Light. Or not. But know in advance that if you give pessimism, anger, hostility, and resentment, you’re certainly not going to get love and laughter in return.

Daily Tune-Up: Doze Into OK

Saturday, April 18

I’m ok. And I’m sure you are too. Though you may have moments of your life when you feel less than ok, and occasionally more than ok, the general consensus is usually ok.

And I’m here to tell you that’s not ok. Complacency is one of our biggest enemies in our spiritual work.

Don’t let yourself doze into “OK” today.

I Love The “GOOP”

I’m not sure why people are hatin’ on Gwyneth Paltrow because she has started a newsletter to try to share what she is learning with other people. Is it because she comes across as sort of “better-than” or because she has a certain presence about her that is strong and confident? I’m not sure, but it’s somewhat perplexing. I also think that this particular newsletter is appropriate for what I just mentioned.

Take away the salacious aspect of it, the is this about Winona piece of it, and you’ll get what I believe are really sound words. When this ran, people just dissed Gwyneth left and right, and why? Because she’s trying to help us all be better versions of ourselves? And what is it that these naysayers are doing to better the world? What is it in themselves that causes them to want to knock her down a peg or two? Try reading Dr. Drew’s book, “The Mirror Effect” and you just might have the answer. But without further ado, here’s part of the latest GOOP release and try to read between the lines.  Thanks to lalaG for sending this along.

Back in the day, I had a “frenemy” who, as it turned out, was pretty hell-bent on taking me down. This person really did what they could to hurt me. I was deeply upset, I was angry, I was all of those things you feel when you find out that someone you thought you liked was venomous and dangerous. I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and…happiness. There went the high road. So, why does it feel so good to hear something bad about someone you don’t like? Or someone you DO like? Or someone you don’t KNOW? I once asked the editor of a tabloid newspaper why all of the stories about a famous British couple had a negative bent. He said that when the headline was positive, the paper didn’t sell. Why is that? What’s wrong with us? I asked the sages to shed a little light.

Here’s to washing our mouths out with soap…

Daily Tune-Up: For Permanent Results

Wednesday, April 15

You’re stressed. The pressure has been building up for some time now. People avoid you for fear that you will bite them. What will it be? A valium? A temper tantrum?  A little depression?

Forget the temporary solutions.

For results that are permanent, understand that the pressure is the Light coming through – trying to at least.  There is something good waiting for you.  You just need to trust that there is a force steering you towards what’s best, and to surrender to it.

(And try smiling today too – it helps.)

Daily Tune-Up: Determine Your Reality

Tuesday, April 14

If thoughts determine our reality, why is it we can’t think a happy thought and fly away to Neverland any time we want? Because we are prone to the domino effect of negative thinking – one negative thought produces countless others. All we need is one tiny self-doubt to start the chain reaction.

Today play detective on yourself. Stakeout your negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. Determine your reality.

Daily Tune-Up: Where’s the Monkey

Thursday, April 9

Giving with agenda lessens your return. Every time you help and then wait for the thank you, you diminish the Light you just revealed.

Agenda is always there. It’s a monkey sitting on your shoulder, sabotaging all your good deeds. Getting rid of this pesky primate means constantly being aware of its presence.

Today, before you help, ask yourself, “where is my monkey now?”

Daily Tune-Up: Give It Five

Wednesday, April 8

Don’t get too caught up in what people say about you. Most of the time they’re not aware of what comes out of their mouths.

You might have experienced this: someone insults you and it sticks with you for days until you finally confront the person, only to be told in earnest, “I said what? I don’t even remember.”

This happens a lot more than we think.

Don’t take it personally today. Let everything go. Ask yourself, “will I care about this in five years from now?” Or better yet, five minutes.

Daily Tune-Up: The Proactive Formula

Monday, April 6 (Yes, I’m behind)

I want to share with you a useful way to deal with any challenge you may face in your life:

The Proactive Formula

  1. an obstacle occurs
  2. realize your reaction is the real enemy
  3. shut down your reactive system and invite the Light in
  4. effectively express your proactive nature

Use this three times today. Yes, it’s work. But it works.

Daily Tune-Up: A Joyful Heart

tuneupdaily6Friday, March 27

Certain things are simply not possible. It is impossible for Light and darkness to coexist in the same space. And it is impossible for a person whose soul is filled with joy to experience hatred in any form. When you hate anyone or anything, there is a dark space in your heart.

When you feel the cold grip of hatred closing in on you today, remember what I wrote. When you take this teaching to heart, hatred is an impossibility for you, just as surely as a brightly lit room can’t also be dark.

Daily Tune-Up: Make Some Peace

Tuesday, March 24

There’s this force inside of us that wants to destroy everything that is good in our lives. It especially likes to seep into our relationships and wreak havoc there because it knows herein lies the greatest potential for our happiness.

Today, find one relationship where there is discord and do what you can to make peace.
